WHAT IS SADAQAH?

Sadaqah is voluntary charity given for the sake of Allah (SWT), to help those in need and to purify the giver’s soul. It is not limited to money — any act of kindness, no matter how small, can be considered Sadaqah.

“Every good deed is charity. Indeed, even a smile at your brother is charity.” — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih Muslim)

Unlike Zakat, which is obligatory, Sadaqah is optional but highly rewarded and encouraged in Islam.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR SADAQAH?

Sadaqah can be given to anyone in need, regardless of their religion or background, though priority is often given to those in the Muslim community who are:

  • The poor and needy
  • Orphans and widows
  • Refugees and displaced families
  • The sick or those unable to work
  • Students seeking Islamic education
  • Victims of natural disasters or war

WHY SHOULD PAY SADAQAH?

Giving Sadaqah brings immense benefits in this life and the next:

  • It purifies your wealth and heart
  • Protects from calamities and illness
  • Brings blessings in your life and family
  • Increases your sustenance
  • Earns Allah’s mercy and forgiveness
  • Victims of natural disasters or war

“Charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Tirmidhi)

“Whatever you spend in the way of Allah, He will replace it.” — Qur’an 34:39

SADAQAH IN QURAN & HADITH

Sadaqah (صَدَقَة) comes from the Arabic root word “sidq” (truth, sincerity). It reflects true faith — giving sincerely for the sake of Allah, to help others, expecting nothing in return. Below are some key references to sadaqah the Qur'an:

Surah Al-Imran (3:92)

“You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.”

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:274)

“Those who spend their wealth [in charity] by night and by day, secretly and publicly – they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261)

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.”

Surah Al-Insan (76:8–9)

“They give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We do not seek from you reward or thanks.’”

The HADITH of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Sadaqah:

Narrated by Salman al-Farisi (RA): "Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 589)

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of zakat as one of the core pillars of Islam, highlighting its essential role in the faith.

Sadaqah Protects from Calamity:

Narrated by Salman al-Farisi (RA): "Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 589)

Sadaqah Provides Shade on the Day of Judgement:

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA): “The shade of the believer on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 604)

Sadaqah Treats Illness:

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA) “Treat your sick with charity.” (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir by At-Tabarani 10737)

Charity Does Not Decrease Wealth:

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): “Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives, except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status.” (Sahih Muslim 2588)

Sadaqah Jariyah (Ongoing Charity) Continues After Death:

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah, knowledge from which benefit is gained, and a righteous child who prays for him.” (Sahih Muslim 1631)

Allah Accepts Charity and Grows it:

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): “Indeed, Allah accepts charity and takes it with His right hand and nurtures it for the one who gave it...” (Sahih Muslim 1014)

Sadaqah purifies both wealth and soul. The Qur’an encourages giving sadaqah as a means of helping the poor and supporting community welfare. It is both a spiritual and social means for Muslims to purify their wealth and support those in need.
