Aqiqah: The Sacrifice for a Newborn
Aqiqah is a highly recommended Islamic tradition where a sheep or goat is sacrificed to celebrate the birth of a child. The practice is based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who recommended performing Aqiqah for both boys and girls as a way to express gratitude to Allah for the gift of a child.
The Aqiqah ritual involves offering two animals for a male child and one for a female child, although these numbers can vary. The meat from the sacrifice is divided into three parts: one-third is given to the poor, one-third is shared with family and friends, and the remaining third is kept for the family. This practice serves not only as a means of celebrating the arrival of a child but also as an act of charity, reinforcing the importance of helping those in need.
In addition to the sacrifice, the child’s hair is often shaved on the seventh day after birth, and the weight of the shaved hair in gold or silver is given in charity. This further emphasizes the themes of purification, gratitude, and charity, which are integral to the act of Aqiqah.
