Fidya and Kaffara: Atonement for Missed Fasts
Fidya and Kaffara are important provisions in Islam that allow Muslims to compensate for missed or broken fasts during the holy month of Ramadan.
Fidya applies when a person is unable to fast due to reasons such as illness, old age, pregnancy, or any condition that prevents them from fasting. In such cases, Fidya involves feeding a poor person for each day of fasting missed. This ensures that the individual can still fulfill the spiritual essence of Ramadan through charity. It is a compassionate alternative for those facing long-term challenges that make fasting impossible.
Kaffara, on the other hand, is required when someone deliberately breaks their fast through actions such as eating, drinking, or engaging in other prohibited acts during the daylight hours of Ramadan. To atone, the person must either fast for 60 consecutive days if one is capable and if not, to feed 60 poor people. Kaffara serves as a reminder of the sanctity of fasting, encouraging Muslims to take responsibility for any intentional violations by helping those in need.
Both Fidya and Kaffara focus on themes of charity and social responsibility, ensuring that the less fortunate are provided for while allowing individuals to maintain their spiritual obligations. At Muslim Help, we ensure that your Fidya and Kaffara payments go directly to those who are most in need, supporting them during Ramadan and beyond.
